Luke: Mama, I'm going to build a c-a-s-o-o-l.
Me: A...what?
Luke: A castle!

Chatting with Luke
Luke, reading the cover of one of his books: Frog...Ran. Or maybe rane. No, it's ran because there's no silent "e."
Earlier, we were talking about the fact that Weston has a doctor visit tomorrow.
Me: we have to take West in for some shots tomorrow.
Luke: poor Weston.
Me: yes. We'll have to help him feel better.
Luke: how?
Me: by giving him hugs and kisses...and maybe taking a special snack for afterwards. And they may give him a sticker.
Luke: you mean they may give ME a sticker. Those stickers are for big boys.
Me: Weston is getting pretty big.
Luke: Weston is, in fact, a toddler. Anyway, even if he's big, he's still a baby...because he's MY baby.

Almost As Good As Snow
Have you ever wondered what might happen if you give two kids a huge piece of styrofoam and then get distracted with cooking dinner?

Snow
We had our first (and likely only) snowstorm of the year last night and fearing it would melt before we got up this morning, we went out to play in it in the middle of the night. Was it a responsible parenting choice to keep the kids up for two hours past their bedtime so they could experience the snow? No, probably not. Was it worth it? Oh, yeah.
For those of you who live in places where snow is a regular occurrence: don't judge me for calling this a "snowstorm." Seriously, this is the best we get. Once a year.

Tired
Weston has had the flu for the past few days and he is finally on the mend. Today is the first day that he has been eating and playing more normally, but clearly, he's still tired. At lunch time, he put a piece of sweet potato in his cheek, held it there for about 10 minutes, and then fell asleep in the chair.

Play
Yesterday, while Luke was at preschool, Weston and I went to the children's museum. He spent the first 45 or so minutes wandering around aimlessly because Luke wasn't around to play with him, but eventually, he realized that the world is an interesting place, even in the temporary absence of his brother. It became even more interesting when a two-year-old took particular interest in him and spent a few minutes hugging and kissing him and trying to lead him around. Eventually, I had to distract her with some stuffed animals because Weston started looking like he was going to eat her if she touched him again. Here are some pictures from our first solo outing ever.

About Weston
That sounds bad. It's just that...I know very well how he plays with his brother. And with his brother's friends. But until this morning, I really had no idea how he played on his own. As it turns out, he does very well. In fact, not only does he do very well, but he knows things that I had no idea he knew. For example, he can match his color & shape puzzle up pretty well. And he seems to have some knowledge of color names. And he's really pretty good at expressing himself. He doesn't say as many words or make up as many sentences as Luke did at this age, but this kid has preferences. About EVERYTHING. And he will let you know about them, no problem. There's no distracting or re-directing him...when he decides that he's going to turn the light switch on and off fifty-nine times, then by god, that's what he's going to do and woe betide anyone who tries to stop him. (Most of the time, I do try to stop him and most of the time, I do succeed. And most of the time, I do sustain severe scratches and bruises as a result.)
He yells at people when they annoy him. At the park today, he yelled at and tried to attack a ten-year-old. A TEN-YEAR-OLD. Because the ten-year-old unintentionally WALKED IN WESTON'S PATH. Of course, since the other kid had the better part of a decade on Weston, he didn't even take notice of the little ball of fury that was hurtling after him, but stuff like this? Is why I'm not too keen on introducing him to other toddlers. Plus, he bites. And hits. And wrestles. And sits on people. Yeah, definitely not a good idea to unleash him on unsuspecting toddlers.
On the other hand, he is possibly the most affectionate toddler I have ever encountered. He spends his days showering us with hugs and kisses and still prefers to spend his nights cuddled up with another person. He hugs and kisses the cats every time they allow him close enough to do so. He tries to sit on Luke's lap every chance he gets. He makes a beeline for my friend and hugs and kisses and loves on her whenever we see her...and usually cries when we have to leave her. He is such a wonderful mixture of independent and loving and his toddlerhood has been quite the ride so far.
